  1. CLASSIC!! Yes, the premiere episode was absolutely flawless in my opinion!

  2. We celebrated Cinco de Mayo by getting take-out from a new Mexican restaurant in town, and watching the first episode of ST: Strange New Worlds while consuming it. The hubby and I quite enjoyed both!

    1. Last night, I make tacos, my secret guacamole recipe, Spanish rice, and refried beans. Wendy got home a bit late, so Jayden and I were already watching SNW (about 15 minutes into the episode) when Wendy came in with her dinner plate to join us. She began watching with us, and bout 15 seconds later, she asked me, “Is this a fan film?”

      True story. 🙂

  3. To anyone who complains that you can’t write concisely… By my reckoning, your average word count per blog has just gone down markedly! 🙂

  4. LOL! 🙂 I liked it so much, we watched it again! 🙂 Seriously! Wow! Was it “perfect”? No… but to be brutally honest, it’s SO MUCH BETTER than what has been called “Star Trek” these last few years! What a breath of fresh air! The only nits I can pick… (Without spoilers) The sound effect for the communicator when it “rang”… should have been the “Boop-boop”… I mean, it’s THE SAME COMMUNICATOR as in TOS! LOL! 😉 Minor nit. Vulcans use a hand/finger gesture to express love and affection for their spouse. ’nuff said. 😉 A slightly more than minor nit, but it wasn’t a deal-breaker. The “interior” of the ship… weird. But not a deal-breaker, either. The story itself? FIVE SHINING STARS FOR THE STORY!!!!!! THIS IS STAR TREK!!! THANK YOU!!!! 😀 😀 😀 Overall, 4 1/2 stars for the whole package. 🙂 That’s my review! Ah… and I did it without spoilers! 😉
PS: Nice, concise blog, there, Johnathan! LOL! 😉

      1. Hmmm… hard to imagine it getting much better than this. 🙂 But that’s good to know! (Orville kinda did that… so maybe?)

ANYWAY, it is nice to see that there are others, here, agreeing with me, that THIS IS STAR TREK!! FINALLY! 😀 I sure hope TPTB are paying attention… but ALSO, that WORD SPREADS among Trek Fans, that REAL TREK is back, and they start subscribing and watching. Money talks… so if it talks LOUD enough, TPTB will realize what WE THE FANS WANT, and will start making MORE REAL TREK! 🙂 (Yeah, I’m shouting with excitement.) 😀

Confession: When watching it the second time… some of the scenes on that planet near the end… yeah, something in my eye. 🙂 Good stuff, man. GOOOOOD STUFF!!!! (Query: How does one add vertical spaces to posts?)

          1. Hmmm… unless it’s something weird in how the PREVIEW handles text, vs after it’s been approved & posted… when I get the preview, there are NO vertical spaces (paragraph breaks) in my posts… yet, I do see them here. I tried using TWO carriage returns for a paragraph break, now, instead of just one. Now that I see my posts, I can see the vertical spaces. Interesting. 🙂

Seems that there’s a pretty wide consensus that SNW is MUCH more like REAL TREK than any of the other shows. Comments here, and elsewhere, seem to have a MAJORITY of “This is REAL TREK” sentiments… as opposed to the “It’s ALL TREK!” kinds of posts on the other show discussions. Interesting. 😉

          2. And four out of five dentists recommend sugarless gum for their patients who chew gum. This has always left me to wonder: who is the fifth dentist, and what’s his rationale for having his patients chew gum with sugar in it?

  5. Since you obviously decided to phone this one in because of all the other blogs you’ve been writing lately… I’ll take over.

The episode was amazing. Seriously. I feel like I’m watching actual Star Trek again.

    However…

    1) HOW and WHY did Starship Archer only have three crew members on board – two of whom were astrophysicists and therefore, basically useless in a first contact mission? Is three a standard crew complement on a ship that size?

    2) Is it typical for an entire crew (even if it’s only 3 people) to beam down to an unknown planet and leave the ship unattended?

    3) Did the Kileys fire their lame plasma torpedoes BEFORE Enterprise raised their shields? If so, that means the Kileys could detect ships in orbit… so why didn’t they ever fire on the Archer? If not, that means the Kileys detected Enterprise because it raised its shields, then had fully-fueled and ready-to-fire missiles that escaped the planet’s gravity, acquired a target lock, and then hit Enterprise in approximately 5-10 seconds, despite the fact that said torpedoes do NOT have warp propulsion.

    4) WHAT HAPPENED to the Archer when the Enterprise crew rescued Number One and her team? Did the ship stay in orbit of the planet, unsupervised? Was it towed home? Self-destructed? Gifted to the Kileys?

    Discuss. I’ll see myself out.

    1. One of the reasons this felt so much like “real” classic Star Trek is because, despite all the stuff that didn’t make sense, I didn’t feel the need to complain about it. 😉

    2. OK, here come some spoilers, so I’ll address those! 😉 (I just wish I could figure out the vertical spacing! ENTER KEY twice, nope. Add a space with it, nope. Sigh.) I honestly wondered about THAT, too… (Points 1, 2, 3) “What about the USS Archer?” (Johnathan Archer? Nice nod.) I also heard another nod, in the beginning, a ship called “The Stamets”.

Point #3, That first ship, perhaps they didn’t perceive as a threat. They were alarmed by it, but it was alone, and it approached slowly. The Enterprise “BOOM!” drops out of warp, almost right in orbit… it’s bigger than the fist ship, and quickly finds it. Perhaps they felt much more threatened…knowing that they also had taken prisoners from that 1’st ship, now it’s “big sister” was coming for it.

      Good questions!

    3. Though I’m not letting it affect my enjoyment, I did have similar questions. It’s my only real complaint in an otherwise flawless series premiere

  6. I don’t remember the last time I was this excited to watch Star Trek. Just enough 60’s classic TOS mixed with 21st Century Science Fiction expectation. The story is a classic Star Trek story. Less developed civilization helped to not go down the same destructive path we did. I loved it. I can’t wait to see where this goes.

    STAR TREK IS BACK BABY.

    1. By now, I presume you’ve seen the 2’nd episode, now? Man, I actually had tears in my eyes near the end, with what happened for that planet. 🙂 THIS ***IS*** STAR TREK!!!!! <3 LOVE IT!!

  7. I love it. You almost had me there for second. Very classy Mr. Lane. Carry on.

  8. “One of the reasons this felt so much like “real” classic Star Trek is because, despite all the stuff that didn’t make sense, I didn’t feel the need to complain about it.”

I just watched it yesterday. Unlike you, I do feel the need to complain sort of reversing how we approached Picard.

My #1 is that they knew the size of the Enterprise given their level of technology so mere size should not have been intimidating. Having missiles having no effect should have been sufficient. A comment about “your 5 missiles had no effect on us so I have the biggest stick which I can demonstrate if necessary” was in order at that point in the episode.

Still, it was a good episode.

    1. I think “size” was being used figuratively, Jerry. It’s not that the Enterprise was “big” so much as it was hanging in the air in much the way that bricks don’t. The folks on the planet had nothing that could do that. So one would assume this alien ship could do many MORE things that their technology couldn’t couldn’t. In other words, the Federation had a bigger metaphorical stick. Not an actual bigger literal stick…or in this case, starstick. 🙂

  9. The only thing I wish they didn’t do is change the bridge. I liked the design of the Enterprise bridge that we saw in discovery with the walkway behind the back consoles and it had different coloring
